How to Create a Perfect Morning Routine in 5 Steps
Do you struggle in the mornings? Are you sluggish, unmotivated, and wish you could have some structure to help you get more done in the morning? Or maybe you just waste so much time and you want to become more productive? Would you like to not feel frazzled and run down before the day has even begun?
I hope I’m not the only one who has struggled for years to develop a productive morning routine! My mornings in the past have been completely wasted on good days, and incredibly stressful on bad days.
My typical morning in the past would be spent wasting time on social media, followed by feeling overwhelmed because I was behind on EVERYTHING. Every little unexpected hiccup would send me spiraling into this pit of stress. (Yep – a stress pit. Okay, so I’m not too good at analogies, just work with me!)
In summary – my mornings were not effective or useful for anything. They were essentially wasted time with no purpose. To combat this, I challenged myself to create a morning routine. And not just any routine, but a routine that I would learn to stick to and create some awesome habits that would help me feel like a productivity ninja! (Life goals = become a productivity ninja.)

So what IS a morning routine, and why is it important?
A morning routine is whatever you do in the morning, typically the time before you leave for work (if you work outside the home) or the first few hours after you wake up (if you stay at home).
Everyone has a morning routine, whether they are aware of it or not. People thrive under routine, so we naturally develop them. When I wake up, the very first thing I do is stumble downstairs to the coffeepot (well, actually now I drink a glass of water first, thanks to my new morning routine!). It’s instinctive and automatic – I know I need my coffee! This is the first part of my morning routine.
The problem is, a lot of people haven’t put in the effort to create a good morning routine. It’s work, and it’s not super fun when you’re having to put in all that mental effort to remember to do the important things. Let’s be honest – it’s way more fun to sit on the couch and scroll through Facebook for a couple hours…. Yep, guilty.
But developing a fantastic morning routine can completely turn your whole day around…. And developing that routine into automatic habits that continue long-term can completely turn your life around!
Imagine how amazing you would feel if you could get some quiet time in, complete some basic chores, make a plan for the day, decide what’s for dinner, and get yourself ready – all in the first hour or so of waking up!
Now obviously, everyone is different, and your needs are likely not going to be the same as mine. So how do you decide what to include in your morning routine?
How to create a perfect morning routine in 5 steps
Here are step-by-step instructions to help you create your perfect morning routine in just 5 simple steps!
Think about your current morning routine – what time do you normally get up? And what are the things do you normally do every day or nearly every day within the first couple hours of waking up? (Write down the good, the bad, and the ugly. Be honest with yourself!)
Grab a sheet of paper or download this awesome free printable. On your paper, first write what time you want to wake up every morning. Next, write a list of all the things you want to do in the morning. Don’t hold back here. Think about your dream life…. What would your mornings look like in your dream life?
Go through each item on your list and write down how much time each one will take, approximately. Now, consider how much time you have in the morning, and cross off any items that don’t fit within that time frame. You’ll have to prioritize here – although it’s important to have some downtime in the morning, the goal is to have a productive morning, so choose your most productive tasks first. That being said, I fully believe it’s incredibly important to have a quiet time in place to refresh your mind and spirit. (Read my post about quiet time by clicking here)
Using a fresh sheet of paper or the free printable you downloaded, create a new morning routine, filling in the items from your list that didn’t get crossed off. Put them in the order you wish to accomplish them, and write the time each item is supposed to be completed. This schedule is just a guideline meant to help you stay on track. Remember that unexpected things are likely going to come up sometimes, so just do the best you can. This isn’t about perfection – it’s about making small changes to become a better version of yourself.

One Final Tip for Your Success
A great morning routine starts the night before – set your coffeemaker, set out your outfit, pack lunches, load and run the dishwasher, etc. Do anything you can to help your morning go more smoothly.

- Decide on a set wake-up time and stick with it! Don’t hit snooze.
- Drink water first thing.
- Make time for quiet time – time to yourself to refresh and renew. Start your day with a peaceful spirit.
- Do some exercise or stretching – just get your body moving.
- Eat a healthy breakfast to nourish your body.
- Write in a gratitude journal to keep a thankful heart.
- Make your bed. It’ll make your whole room look cleaner and motivate you to accomplish more throughout the day.
- Plan out your day – write your to-do list and plan your meals. It will make your day much more productive.
- Empty your clean dishwasher so it can be filled with dirty dishes throughout the day.
- Get dressed in an outfit that makes you feel amazing!
- Write in a journal.
- Gather up all your dirty laundry and start the washing machine.
- Read a chapter of a book that challenges you.
- Open the blinds and let in natural light.
- Set a goal to focus on for the day.
- Write a positive affirmation on your mirror – to remind yourself how amazing you really are!
